Types of Mental Health Issues

The term mental health disorder is similar to what psychiatric and psychological disorders mean. When a person developed mental health issues, it affects the overall well-being of a person and may experience psychological-related symptoms. A person who has it may feel distressed.

The following are the different types of mental health issues that one may experience when aging. It is important to know the type of mental health problems a person experiences to get the right treatment and medication needed. Read on to know further.

Bipolar-Related Disorder

This type of mental health disorder refers to the changes in one’s energy and activity levels. It also affects the overall mood of a person. This disorder can cause a person to shift its moods from being energetic to feeling depressed. The shifting of moods can be referred to as either hypomania or mania.

Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorder can cause a person to experience persistent and excessive anxiety, worry, fear, and other related behavioral disturbances. When we say fear, it includes one’s emotional response to either perceived or real threat. It causes a person to think that threats may arise in the future. Anxiety disorders are broken down into different types, which include agoraphobia, GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder), social anxiety disorder, and many others.

Dissociative Disorders

The dissociative disorders refer to a mental issue that includes interruption or dissociation in different consciousness aspects, which include memory and identity. Just like anxiety disorders, this one is also broken down into different types. These include dissociative amnesia, derealization or depersonalization disorder, and dissociative identity disorder.

Somatic Symptom Disorders

Somatic symptom disorder is a type of psychological illness that can cause a person to experience physical symptoms. Unfortunately, experts did not come up with its possible physical cause.

This type of mental health disorder emphasizes the person’s abnormal behaviors, feelings, and thoughts. It is broken down into different categories, which include factitious disorder, conversion disorder, and illness anxiety disorder.

Eating Disorders

Eating disorders refer to the person’s obsessiveness with weight. It is also characterized by disruptive eating patterns, which can lead a person to experience mental and physical health issues. This type of disorder is noticeable during childhood and infancy stages. Eating disorders are broken down into different types, including anorexia nervosa, rumination disorder, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and pica.

Sleep Disorders

Sleep disorders refer to the changes in one’s sleeping patterns. This type of mental health issue can affect the daytime functioning of a person, which can cause him or her to feel distressed.

Sleep disorder has different types. It could be narcolepsy, insomnia disorders, hypersomnolence, breathing-related sleep disorders, parasomnias, and many more. This type of issue is treatable.
